About The Academy of Arts at January's

Our Mission

The Academy of Arts at January's has been training dancers in jazz, ballet, tap, and modern since 1986. Our mission is to provide a highly professional and creative atmosphere, and to promote the emotional and technical growth of our students.

At The Academy of Arts at January's students are first and foremost treated as individuals with their basic needs as people met first. As a result of this philosophy we produce confident, motivated, and well-adjusted dancers.

Our staff is highly trained and professional. All of our instructors pride themselves on staying current in teaching methods and philosophies. Our teachers are always working to improve their technique and teaching skills, enabling them to produce better quality dancers.

At The Academy of Arts at January's your child comes first...always.

The Program

Students are taken into the program as early as age 2 and may study through adulthood. We offer beginning classes for the novice, as well as more advanced classes for the more serious dancers. Classes are available 5 days a week and at various times to accomodate today's busy families. We also offer an introductory movement class for 2 year olds called "Tippy Toe Two's".

The program is under the direction of January Johnson Wolfe, who has spent the last nineteen years bringing dance education to the Charleston area. She believes that dance should be an everyday part of people's lives. She is dedicated to the idea that exposure to the arts helps create happy, healthy individuals, and that when approached with enthusiasm and grace, the arts can literally transform.

Early Childhood Program ages 3 through 5

.

.

Our goal in working with children this young is to first expose them to the grace and beauty of movement. Children have a natural curiosity and sense of movement that only needs nurturing. We feel our job is to allow them to express themselves in a fun filled and safe environment while guiding and encouraging them to reach for new heights.
Educators now know that training young children in the concepts of movement sequencing, patterning, and spatial relationships lays a strong foundation for later development of reading and mathematics. Children in our early childhood program work actively in all of these areas.

Primary Dance Program

At age 6, children move into the primary dance program, a transition class that prepares them for the study of classical ballet technique, which begins at age seven. Essentially, this class takes the concepts learned in the early childhood program and begins to put them into the format used in an actual ballet class.

At age seven, students begin working at the ballet barre and concentrating on more technique oriented materials. However, these classes are still taught with the age and attention span of the child at the heart of the class. Dance should be fun. It is our goal to see that it is enjoyable and that children flourish of their own accord.

Secondary Level ages 8 through 11

By the age of eight , students can begin to choose the area of dance that most appeals to them. Some students may choose to study and concentrate on only one form of dance, while others may decide to incorporate different styles of dance into their weekly regimen in hopes of becoming a well rounded dancer. We work closely with the parents at this point to decide which styles of dance and what level of classes are most appropriate for their child.

Through participation in these classes, students continue to work on skills that will carry them through their dance career and beyond. We strive to instill determination, drive and dedication in our dancers, qualities that we hope will enhance their lives forever.

Upper Division Program ages 11 and beyond

By the time students reach the age of eleven, there is a clear distinction in their approach to dance. Some dancers only wish to take one class a week for a fun and energetic release. Some dancers are searching for a superior program that will help ready them for a career in dance. We have a place for both types of dancers. Both types of dancers are important.
